Coconut Crabs, the largest arthropod on land

The Coconut Crab, Birgus latro, is the world’s largest terrestrial arthropod, obtaining weights of up to 9 pounds.  Although called the Coconut Crab, coconuts represent only a small fraction of their diet.  Instead they feed primarily on the fruits, nuts, and seeds they find laying around the Indian and Pacific Ocean islands they dwell on.  You can see 20 spectacular photographs of them over at Environmental Graffiti.
